Stella Nyanzi Suffers Miscarriage

At a recent court hearing for a case against Makerere University involving payment of wages as directed by the Staff Tribunal, Dr Stella Nyanzi made the revelation that she suffered a miscarriage while at Luzira Prison. Her lawyer Isaac Semakadde told the court that due to his client’s health situation they were not able acquire the relevant documents needed by the court for the case. As a result both parties called for an adjournment and the case was postponed to the 13th of February.  Dr Stella Nyanzi has been in  incarceration since the later half of  last year for disrespecting the President’s mother on social media.
Following the revelation the Uganda Prisons came forward to comment on the situation. The Public Relations Officer of Uganda Prisons met with NBS’ Canary Mugume to shed some light on the situation. He stated Prisons has a full directorate of medical services with medical professionals at different levels and that Murchison Bay Hospital is the main referral for prisoners but if the situation is out of their control they are further referred to the respected government hospital. He further went on to state that when new inmates are brought in there is specific protocol undertaken, every inmate is screened by medical professionals and if something was discovered steps are taken to ensure they receive the adequate care. When asked to comment on Dr Stella Nyanzi’s situation he remained tight-lipped citing Doctor- Patient confidentiality and privacy but went on to say she is in the best possible care at the moment.
