Minimum Wage Bill Passed By Government

Parliament on Tuesday passed the Private Members Minimum Wage Bill 2013 to help improve the welfare of workers in the county.

Workers’ MP Arinaitwe Awakajara stated that the bill is aimed to empower the population of Ugandans as well as improve on their purchasing power in this economy. The minimum wage does not apply to all sectors whereby each sector be it domestic work. agriculture or factory all have their own respective minimum wages. The MP further stated that it is not realistic to have the same for all as there are different factors involved for different sectors.

According to legislators the bill will see an establishment of the minimum wage port that will have a mandate in establishing minimum wage point per sector.

Employees who are caught defaulting on the regulation will be fined UGX10Million or face imprisonment for up to 3 years and in extreme cases face both.
