Umeme on Tuesday morning arrested 5 suspected underground cable vandals, in what the power distributor said was a huge breakthrough in its fight against power theft and vandalism.
Umeme believes the suspects were part of a notorious racket that has vandalisedMutundwe, Kawanda, Mbarara, Kasese, Tororo, Soroti and Lira substations in a spell of only 3 months.
One of the suspects managed to elude capture after the group’s Mercedes Benz truck they were travelling in was intercepted by security operatives led by Umeme Head of Security Godson Nshekanabo at Kampiringisa on the Masaka-Kampala Highway.
Nshekanabo said the five were arrested after a tip-off by informers on their mission in Rwengo District
The suspects were briefly detained in Mpigi CPS, but were transferred to Jinja Rd Police Station and later at the Police Special Investigative Unit in Kireka.
The power distributor cites vandalism as one of its main challenges.
