By late 1985, the advance to capture Kampala had begun and by 22nd January 1986, Museveni’s NRA rebels had almost encircled the capital. The 1st, 3rd, 5th and 11th battalions from Mbarara led the frontal attack from Masaka, the 7th battalion advancing from Hoima road had reached Nansana through Kakiri.
On this day, 31 years back, the National Resistance Army took over Kampala and the country as the announcements rung on Radio Uganda and Uganda Television, marking the end of an era and the start of another.
