The directorate of public prosecutions has decried the deficiencies within the judicial system that are causing persistent case backlog. The DPP says that shortage of judges, inadequate funds and shallow Police investigations have all contributed to the problem. Police has however distanced itself from the problem, saying the back and forth movement of files is caused by the DPP where in other cases police is forced to hold suspects in cells longer than they should.
