The Institute of Certified Public Accountants – Uganda (ICPAU) is concerned over the general lack of critical thinking among students undertaking its three courses. The Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB) says many candidates have a challenge with numerical subjects with many students unable to provide practical solutions. This was at the release of the examination results for the November/December 2017 examination sitting. A total of 6,055 students attempted exams for the Certified Public Accountants, the Accounting Technicians Diploma and the Certified Tax Advisor courses. The overall pass rate was 40.5% compared to 44.3% in the June 2017 sitting for the Accounting Technicians Diploma, 48.1% compared to 42.2% in June 2017 for the Certified Tax Advisor course and 34% compared to 31.9% in the August 2017 sitting for the Certified Public Accountants course.
