Museveni's Order on UTL Attracts Mixed Reactions

The directive by President Museveni to government agencies to purchase internet from Uganda Telecom has been received with a mixture of hope and apprehension. Museveni ordered that UTL’s debts totaling billions of shillings be converted into equity and that the firm should be the sole supplier of internet services to government agencies. While the minister of state for Privatization Evelyn Anite says the move will rejuvenate the ailing telecom firm, legal experts like Fred Muwema say the directive is illegal and could be challenged.
