Following the recent purge among the Makerere University staff , the affected staff have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Rebecca Kadaga to intervene in the matter.
The purge was initiated by Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe on claims of under performance among staff. About 40 staff were dismissed last week and have called on the Speaker of Parliament to offer help in the matter. They claimed their dismissal was illegal and uncalled for and so sought Parliament intervention. On receiving the petition from the representatives of the dismissed staff, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga decried over the state of affairs at the country’s most revered educational institution and has offered her help in stabilizing the situation by calling on the Minister of Education Hon. Janet Museveni to initiate an investigation into the matter.
On hearing the actions taken by the affected staff, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has criticized the dismissed staff for involving the Speaker of Parliament into university affairs. He stated that the university council set up a staff tribunal for the sole purpose of handling cases of staff who feel aggrieved by decisions made by the appointments board. He claimed university issues should be brought to the staff tribunal for solutions instead of calling on the Speaker of Parliament who is busy handling National issues.
