With the growing number of industries in Uganda, the environment is facing a high risk of pollution due to the increased amount of discharged contaminated elements that are released into the water bodies.
Dr. Callist Tindimugaya, the Commissioner Water Resources says that the water is not fit for use and can cause diseases like malaria, diarrhea and cholera which arise from polluted water. He said that factories are the leading polluters of the environment with many discharging contaminated elements into the main streams.
“When you discharge untreated fluids into the water, you are polluting the water and its the same water you are going to use”said Tindimuguya. He added that National Water is currently spending three times more than they used to spend about five years ago to treat water which cost is incurred by Ugandans. He said that a number of people from UMA have been going to him to get their own water systems claiming that National water is very expensive.
