On Saturday 26th October 2019, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni visited the ghetto of Makindye Kampala suburb to meet with the youth.

During this meeting, he made surprise appointments which included Catherine Kusasira as the coordinator Kampala affairs for the president and Mark Bugembe, also known as Buchman, as the special envoy of the president to the ghetto.

This has however been viewed by Ugandans as an attempt to rally the support of the youth. Political analyst Ismail Mayengo has interpreted this as a panic move to win over the minds of the ghetto people who are supporters of People Power movement leader Robert Kyagulanyi.

“The majority of the country’s population is the youth and it will be politically suicidal if one ignored it,” says Mayengo.

Mayengo cautioned that this is not sustainable, advising the president and the NRM to look for better ways of addressing the concerns of the ghetto that are majorly unemployment and poor living standards.

“When he does that, people interpret it differently and say, do you see? he is afraid of these young fellows who are shouting People Power,” he added.
