Following the police call onto private firms and individuals to present their guns for electronic registration, some have not adhered to this directive. Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says that all unregistered firearms will be considered illegal after the deadline warning the owners that they risk suffering the consequences.

“We would like to give a last warning to all those civilians who are holding private firearms and have not availed them for electric registration which is now in advanced stages,” said Fred Enanga.

He added that registration of police firearms has been concluded but that of civilians and private security organisations is still underway and is set to close at the end of February.

The police say that the fingerprinting of guns has proved to be effective in reducing crime due to the ballistic record in the database which is easily traceable to an individual or a group of individuals.

This is because each firearm tested leaves a unique marking on the shell casing where it is impossible for two firearms to bare the same marking.

“The task team is not going to renew any firearm for any individual who has not brought his gun for electronic registration. Therefore it means that once they don’t have renewed licenses, they will possessing those firearms illegally and can be charged for illegal possession of a firearm,” said Fred Enanga.
