United Nations Women Country Representative Dr Maxime Houinato says that women are at the centre of the COVID-19 fight, yet they are the most economically hit by the crisis because most of them live on hand to mouth.

“In every crisis that we have known, the people that prevented the collapse of the countries have been the women most of the time,” said Dr Maxime.

He says that economically, women were the most unemployed in the country. He has also revealed that for men, unemployment is at 6% while women stand at 14%, adding that 71% of people in the informal sector are women.

“When these people do not have salaries, and yet they live on hand to mouth, when the crisis strikes they are the most vulnerable,” said Dr Maxime.
