The government has denied any intentions to regulate the highly inflated transport fare during this era of COVID-19. The Works and Transport Minister General Katumba Wamala says that there is little the Government can do since Uganda is a free market economy.

This is after transport fares to different destinations have tripled ever since public transport was allowed back on the road. This has left those unable to meet these prices stranded at the parks.

General Katumba who is concerned about the exploitation of the population says the best the Ministry of Works and Transport can do is to dialogue with taxi and bus operators and plead for lower fares.

“That is the reality it is a free economy and I think supply and demand will determine and bring down those prices. Just wait for within a week and after more vehicles have come on the road, you will see those prices going down,” said Gen. Katumba Wamala.
