The 2020 Uganda Police crime report reveals that between 2019 and 2020, 440 people were killed as a result of of aggravated domestic violence. 230 of them were male adults and 169 of them were female adults.

Grace Namataka, the National Advocacy Officer, Center for prevention of domestic violence says women have always been disproportionately affected by domestic violence much as there is a rise in the cases of domestic violence against men. Namataka says we also need to look into circumstances under which violence against men is happening.

“Most of these women (who have turned out violent against their husbands) have endured years and years of domestic violence from the men and it is usually out of self defense or revenge,” said Namataka.

Namataka urges everybody not to normalise violence because it is not normal. She encourages everybody to challenge violence when you see it. She points out that many people endure the violence because they won’t be believed and they will be blamed for what has happened to them. She urges of all us not to vitimise victims. In many cases the victims who report are sent back home to sort out issues, this she says is wrong on the side of authorities and is leading many deaths.
