Teachers Refuse to Call off Strike, Government Bends

Filbert Baguma, General Secretary of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has asked teachers to  continue with the strike against discriminatory salary enhancement despite  government intimidation. The strike started on 15 June 2022 and has seen arts teachers leaving the classroom for their fellow sciences teachers whose salaries have been enhanced to teach.

UNATU legal team is ready to provide support. Remain firm” Baguma said.

Despite threats from government to remove striking teachers from the pay roll, it has called for a meeting with the teachers’ representatives on 1st July 2022. Teachers remain one of the lowest paid profession in the country.
