Gen Elly Tumwine Send Off
General Elly Tumwine, a former security minister, was buried today in Rwemikoma, Kazo district, and received a 17-gun salute from the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF). Tumwine succumbed to lung cancer at Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi.
There have been mixed reactions to the passing of the bush war general, with a section of Ugandans taking to social media to celebrate. Several authors of the negative sentiments criticized Tumwine of speaking carelessly about the protection of human rights, and this was mostly due to his remarks made in the wake of the riots in November 2020 that claimed 50 lives.
President Museveni in his speech at Kololo on Monday, while paying his last respect scoffed at those jubilating and called them time wasters who have achieved nothing compared to the achievement of the late Elly Tumwine.
“Don’t worry about those Ugandans. When we were fighting Amin, many were calling us vagabonds (when we went to the bush) because we had left jobs. A job of working under Amin and you call it jobs? For us we were despising them. For us we decided to fight. By the time we came, we were no longer vagabonds but Moses. We had become David who killed Goliath. Don’t think about those fellows talking nothing. They are wasting their time and talking nothing,” Museveni
Cynthia Tumwine (daughter of Elly Tumwine), spoke on Sunday and pleaded for her father’s forgiveness if he had ever done anyone wrong, she said the late died grudge free.
