Makerere Strike Called Off
Lecturers are expected to return to Makerere University following a recent strike due to the suspension of staff. The semester got off to a disappointing start as students eager for education were met with absent lecturers which later caused unrest among the students and a police presence.
Dr. Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu, the chairperson of Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), one of the suspended staff, joined NBS’ Simon Kagwa Njala and Mildred Tuhaise to discuss the resolutions made that called off the strike. Six demands were apparently given to the University during a meeting between the two parties on the 15th, with the most notable being the removal of Hon. Thomas Tayebwa and Bruce Balaba from the University Council as well as the reinstatement of the suspended staff with a month’s deadline.
The University was fully open on Monday with all lecturers returning for business but unfortunately the student turnout was low for a university given they had missed weeks of study. This could be due to the students’ uncertainty whether its business as usual.
