Police in Jinja have arrested 30 suspected criminals behind a spate of criminal acts in Bugembe, a Jinja City suburb.

The suspects who were arrested en route for the burial of one of their colleagues who was killed by an angry mob over the weekend are currently in custody at CPS Jinja and Nalufenya Police Station.

Kiira region Police Spokesperson James Mubi says there has been a group of criminals moving on boda bodas waylaying people and snatching bags and phones which has prompted Police to carry out operations.

“House break-ins have also been on the rise in and around the City, especially in the suburbs, but as Police, we have played our part, so we need the collaboration of locals and leaders from the village level to the City Council,” Mubi said

Meanwhile, the Chairman of boda boda riders in Jinja City, Eria Musobya, has warned his members to desist from hiring out their motorcycles or engaging in criminal acts. The boda boda executive committee has also decided to suspend indefinitely all those arrested and convicted in the courts of law.

Police have embarked on intelligence-led operations to crack down on these criminal elements.
