In a surprising turn of events, on September 21 2023, the suspended leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), including Secretary-General Nathan Nandala Mafabi and Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat, have been nominated for the same positions they currently hold within the party.

The nomination process at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi was marked by joy, excitement, and celebrations among party members. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, who arrived with enthusiasm, was the first to be nominated for the position of Secretary-General.

Following a thorough process led by the Party Electoral Commission Chairman Toterebuka Bamwenda, Nandala was declared duly nominated. Party supporters wearing new FDC T-shirts created a security cordon around him during the nomination.

Party President Patrick Amuriat also returned his papers to the party commission and was declared nominated for the position he currently holds.

Jack Sabiti, one of the party elders, appeared to be nominated to replace the current National Chairman, Wasswa Biriggwa.

During the nominations, the leaders took the opportunity to address some of their grievances, particularly directed at Dr. Kiiza Besigye. Amuriat, who had accused Besigye of betrayal, shifted his focus to Party Chairman Wassaw Birigwa, warning that he had been patient enough.

Nandala emphasized that the battle lines have been drawn because they refused to follow a leader whom they initially supported but later turned against them. Other members of the same faction, including Yusuf Nsibambi and Okot Bitek, insisted that the legal battles were just beginning and cautioned the Katonga group that they were headed for difficulties.

While the elections are scheduled for October 6, just two weeks away, the Katonga faction maintains that these nominations are outside the law, further deepening the divisions within the FDC.

A total of 77 candidates were officially nominated to compete for various positions within the NEC.
